SAFECO was founded in 1923 as the General Insurance Company of America. Since its creation, it has grown into a Fortune 500 company and is one of the leading insurance providers in the country. With more than 2,400 employees in the King County metropolitan region at six worksites, SAFECO continues to provide excellence in commute options with innovative programs and incentives.
Since the early 1980s, SAFECO has actively encouraged its employees to utilize commute alternatives. In 2007, SAFECO transitioned 2,000 employees to downtown Seattle. In doing so, SAFECO reduced the number of single occupancy vehicles from 50% to just 10% of their employees. It does this through education and by offering cost effective options such as a FlexPass that provides unlimited trips on Metro, Sound Transit, Community Transit and Pierce Transit. Incentives to ride in carpools and vanpools are central to the program. All employees registered for commute alternatives are eligible for a fully subsidized enrollment in the Zipcar program. SAFECO is a multiple Diamond award winner who continues to make significant contributions to a better environment in the region. The Diamond Ring is a testament to SAFECO's efforts in trip reduction.
*Some definitions: An "ETC" is the staff-level
